Job Summary
Pay range: $39.11-$46.93
Summary
Responsible for preparing tissue specimens by processing, performing microtomy, and mounting slides for microscopic examination and analysis. This role also supports training and mentorship of new staff, escalates issues to the Supervisor or Manager as needed, and acts as a team lead to help resolve workflow or technical issues appropriately.

Essential Functions
Trains new technologists and technicians on proper procedures and techniques, evaluates new technology for clinical application, and assists with updating procedure manuals for inspections and accreditation.
Troubleshoots technical or workflow issues and escalates to the Supervisor or Manager as appropriate.
Processes, embeds, and sections tissue for slide preparation.
Embeds complex cases that fall outside routine embedding procedures.
Performs specialized histologic procedures, including nerve testing, enzyme histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry (IHC), as needed.
Performs frozen sections as required.
Completes and submits proficiency testing.
Performs preventive maintenance and quality control procedures, including cleaning and oiling microtomes, maintaining processors, and changing staining solutions.
Ensures proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to maintain a safe work environment.
Maintains accurate case identification and tracking throughout the entire process to ensure patient safety.
Adheres to hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area.
Functions as a senior technologist, providing advanced technical expertise and guidance to peers.
Serves as a resource to laboratory supervisors and managers and performs additional duties as assigned, such as frozen section support, report review, and contributing to performance evaluations.
Education
Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required.

Licenses and Credentials
One of the following certifications is required: Histotechnician [HT(ASCP)] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) or Histotechnologist [HTL(ASCP)] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC)
Experience
Histology experience 3-5 years required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, and routine staining.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues, train new staff, and manage problems in an effective and organized manner, with knowledge of when to escalate issues to the next level.
- Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
