About the Role:
A research subject matter expert with extensive experience in manuscript handling and scientific expertise. This role involves managing the peer-review process, commissioning content, and representing the organization within the scientific community. The individual will work independently with minimal supervision, handle complex cases, mentor peers and junior colleagues, and contribute significantly to project work.
Key Responsibilities:
Manuscript Handling:
Undertake subject-matter-expert (SME)-driven screening for manuscripts at the appropriate point in the workflow.
Raise integrity concerns via appropriate channels.
Evaluate new submissions for suitability, taking immediate decisions in line with journal policy and scope.
Select and invite reviewers for suitable manuscripts.
Assess reviewer reports and make decisions to Accept/Reject/Revise/Refer manuscripts.
Assess revised manuscripts for the extent and quality of changes made.
Identify appropriate journals for transfer when a reject decision is rendered.
Review rebuttals and take appropriate action in a timely manner.
Commissioning Content:
Send invitations to potential authors for special content (invited reviews, special issues, etc.).
Send reminders to authors who agreed to submit invited content.
Build relationships and drive submissions from authors.
Work with the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) to define journal aims and scope and recommend updates.
Recommend and appoint editorial board members in collaboration with the EiC.
Distribute commissioning KPIs and resourcing with the manager.
Community Engagement:
Stay abreast of subject area and maintain community connections through attendance of seminars, webinars, and conferences.
Represent journals and the organization at scientific conferences and events.
Engage in constant community outreach to enhance personal network, commissioning, journal visibility, and understanding of the subject and community.
Performance Improvement:
Review reporting to identify trends or opportunities for improvement in the performance of the peer review.
Lead project-based improvement efforts in partnership with Editorial Excellence and other relevant teams.
Take a leading role in subject area clusters comprised of handling editors from various teams.
Training & Development:
Provide peer-to-peer training and instruction.
Mentor and train peers and junior colleagues.
Additional Responsibilities:
Work across several titles with multiple Editors-in-Chief, depending on the size of the journals.
Generate leads and ideas for other products and pass them on to appropriate colleagues.
