House & Garden is looking for a Chief Sub Editor to lead its subs desk and oversee the smooth running of editorial production across the magazine and its supplements. Reporting into the Managing Editor, this is a senior role for an exceptional production journalist with strong leadership skills, editorial flair and a passion for process improvement.
The successful candidate will manage and develop a small team while working closely with editorial, art, picture and production departments to ensure all content is delivered accurately, beautifully and on schedule. As well as maintaining the highest editorial standards, this person will play a key role in introducing new systems, workflows and ways of working across the brand.
A meticulous eye for detail, excellent judgement and a flair for headlines and display copy are essential, alongside a deep enthusiasm for the House & Garden brand.
What will you be doing?
Leading the day-to-day running of the subs desk across the magazine and its internal and external supplements.
Managing and mentoring a small team, distributing work effectively and fostering a collaborative, high-performing environment.
Working closely with the Managing Editor to improve and evolve editorial workflows, systems and production processes.
Identifying opportunities to streamline operations and introduce new ways of working across editorial production.
Setting and managing weekly and monthly production schedules and ensuring deadlines are consistently met.
Sub-editing, proofreading and fact-checking all editorial content with exceptional accuracy and sensitivity to tone and style.
Writing and refining headlines, standfirsts, sells, captions and other display copy in House & Garden’s distinctive editorial voice.
Ensuring consistency of house style across all editorial output, maintaining and evolving style guidelines where necessary.
Liaising with editorial, art, production and picture teams to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow.
Overseeing page fitting and final checks in Adobe InDesign and InCopy.
Reviewing final proofs and signing off pages to ensure the magazine and supplements are error-free in every respect.
Liaising with the Managing Editor on legal or editorial issues and implementing amendments where necessary.
Significant experience in a senior sub-editing or copy chief role within a magazine or editorial environment.
A highly organised production journalist with excellent people management and communication skills.
Proven experience improving editorial workflows, introducing new systems or leading operational change within a fast-paced environment.
Exceptional command of English grammar, spelling and style, with a sharp editorial instinct and meticulous attention to detail.
Strong fact-checking skills and a rigorous, diplomatic approach to editing.
Confident working independently and managing multiple deadlines simultaneously.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and InCopy.
A flair for fresh, compelling headlines, standfirsts and page furniture.
Collaborative, solutions-focused and calm under pressure.
A strong affinity with the world of House & Garden and curiosity about interiors, decoration, architecture, gardens, travel, food and culture.
