Job Description

Job Description:

We believe in bold ideas, diverse perspectives, and the drive to transform knowledge into impact. Here, your curiosity fuels progress, your voice shapes innovation, and your ambition helps redefine what’s possible within science and learning. We are a culture that obsesses over impact, challenges, and drives what’s next to power infinite possibilities for our customers, colleagues and society at large.

About the Role:

We are looking for an Assistant Editor to join Wiley’s Comprehensive Editorial Evaluation Team on a 14-month fixed-term contract, supporting our chemistry portfolio with a focus on broad general chemistry, including areas such as organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis and related fields.
This is a great opportunity for someone with a strong chemistry background who wants to stay close to cutting-edge research while building experience in scientific publishing. You will work with manuscripts from submission through peer review, helping ensure that editorial decisions are fair, timely and grounded in strong scientific judgement.
You will be joining a global team of research subject matter experts who support Wiley’s journals by evaluating manuscripts, selecting reviewers, assessing reviewer reports and helping move high-quality research through the publication process.
Job Responsibilities
  • Evaluate new manuscript submissions and assess their suitability for the journal, including scope, quality, scientific rationale and potential fit for peer review.
  • Use your subject expertise to support manuscript triage, reviewer selection and editorial decision-making across a broad chemistry portfolio.
  • Identify and invite appropriate expert reviewers, assess reviewer reports and support decisions to accept, reject, revise or refer manuscripts.
  • Review revised submissions and author responses to determine whether further external review is needed.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with authors, reviewers and internal editorial colleagues throughout the peer review process.
  • Support timely manuscript handling and contribute to a strong author and reviewer experience.

Required Qualifications, Experience and Skills
  • A PhD in Chemistry or a relevant research area.
  • Strong knowledge of broad chemistry, ideally including one or more of: general chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis catalysis, materials chemistry or related disciplines.
  • Research experience in a relevant field, including experience gained during a PhD.
  • A proven interest in scholarly publishing, peer review and scientific communication.
  • Strong scientific judgement and the ability to critically evaluate research beyond one narrow specialism.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong attention to detail, organisation skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications, Experience and Skills
  • Experience as an author, reviewer, guest editor or junior editorial board member.
  • Knowledge of the peer review process and common editorial policies or practices in your field.
  • Experience using editorial systems such as Editorial Manager or ScholarOne.
  • An interest in Open Access and broader developments in scholarly publishing.
